“If you don’t learn to read for meaning at an early age, it is almost impossible for you to learn when you are older,” Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka
The deficits and the problems seen in high schools can be traced back quite reliably to children not acquiring foundational understandings of reading for meaning and calculating with understanding in the first three grades of school.
“All of us can play a significant role to make sure that by 2030 we have turned the situation around,” added Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka.
